The Introduction to Soteriology Christian Formation has presented mixed emotions and thoughts about John Wesley and his theological contribution to faith formation. My main “orienting concern” about faith formation is based on Hebrews 11. Verse One essentially gives a definition of faith, in theory, but also in practice. In order for faith to be formed in the believer we must have absolute trust in who God is, and what He can do. Absolute trust leads the believer to trusting the heart of God in the times when we cannot see His heart. The believer does not get to this place instantly, but it is a process that the believer is committed to. At least that is the example set by the “Hall of Faith-ers.”
Additionally, at the commencement of this course, I am most looking forward to interacting with John Wesley’s writings. From the reading, it is evident that John Wesley made significant contributions to theological conversations. As a Wesleyan minister, I am excited to learn more of his perspectives and even how his perspectives changed over his ministry. Like Maddox stated, I have seen the up-close unfair assessment that is brought to the Wesleyan Tradition. At the same time, I believe that the boundaries and standards which were characteristic of the Tradition have been blurred or adjusted. As a young Christian, I believe that I should be able to bring authenticity and authority to the Scriptures and consider the founder of the church’s theological thought.
Moreover, I cannot help but underscore that Wesley’s approach to theology was practical. This is meaningful to me because too often as Christians and churchgoers, we become so focused on the theory of studying Scriptures, that we miss the application. However, the need for application is consistently preached even in the Scriptures. Therefore, I am hoping that this course can take me from the theoretical exegeses to the practical application. Wesley coined the term “social holiness,” and this is one of my passions. Although the gospel can be preached from a pulpit in a sanctuary, it can also be demonstrated in the marketplace. This is an example of Jesus’ model. The church needs to be equipped to minister to the whole person.
Thus, I commit to being fully present in the readings and reflections. I intend to be on time with my assignments so that I can contribute to the discussions in a meaningful way. Equally, it is my intention to learn as much as I can from my colleagues, and professor. Of course, what I learn throughout this journey will be shared with my ministry content, once possible. Also, I am entrusting this journey to God, as I seek to build my faith.
